Latvija, Lietuva, Polija, Igaunija, un Ukraina ir iesniegusi UNESCO kopīgu pieteikumu par Gulagā rakstīto vēstuļu uz bērza tāss iekļaušanu UNESCO programmas “Pasaules atmiņa” starptautiskajā reģistrā. Latvijas vēstules, kas rakstītas uz bērza tāss, tiek glabātas 11 Latvijas muzejos – Tukuma muzejā, Aizkraukles Vēstures un mākslas muzejā, Daugavas muzejā, Jēkabpils Vēstures muzejā, Latvijas Nacionālajā vēstures muzejā, Latvijas Okupācijas muzejā, Madonas Novadpētniecības un mākslas muzejā, Rakstniecības un mūzikas muzejā, Talsu novada muzejā, Andreja Pumpura Lielvārdes muzejā un muzejā “Ebreji Latvijā”. Tukuma muzeja direktore Agrita Ozola uzsver, ka šī nominācija ir svarīga, lai pasaulē vairotu cilvēcību.
Pieteikumā, kas sagatavots sadarbībā ar visu piecu valstu UNESCO nacionālajām komisijām, tostarp ar UNESCO Latvijas Nacionālo komisiju, iekļauti 148 dokumenti, kas tapuši no 1940. līdz 1965. gadam iespaidīgajā padomju represiju sistēmā, ko pazīstam ar nosaukumu Gulags. Dokumentu kopumā ir vēstules, kas rakstītas uz bērza tāss, un citi politisko ieslodzīto vai izsūtīto personu dokumenti, kas glabājas 31 atmiņas institūcijā piecās valstīs – Igaunijā, Latvijā, Lietuvā, Polijā un Ukrainā.
UNESCO programmas “Pasaules atmiņa” starptautiskajā reģistrā ir apkopots pasaules nozīmes dokumentārais mantojums. Reģistrs ir plašāk pazīstama programmas “Pasaules atmiņa” daļa, kuras mērķis ir veicināt atmiņas institūciju sadarbību, lai saglabātu un nodrošinātu piekļuvi dokumentārajam mantojumam. Pašlaik reģistrā ir 494 ieraksti.
Ar Latviju saistītie ieraksti “Pasaules atmiņa” starptautiskajā reģistrā pašreiz ir četri – Dainu skapis (2001. gadā), Baltijas ceļa dokumentārais mantojums, kas iesniegts kopā ar Igauniju un Lietuvu (2009. gadā), Polijas sagatavotā nominācija par Ļubļinas ūnijas noslēgšanas akta dokumentu (2017. gadā), Hanzas savienības dokumenti, ko kopīgi iesniegušas Dānija, Igaunija, Latvija, Polija, Vācija un Beļģija (2023. gadā).
Lēmums par uz bērza tāss rakstīto vēstuļu iekļaušanu UNESCO programmas “Pasaules atmiņa” starptautiskajāreģistrā gaidāms 2025. gada maijā.
